Clarifications Needed: I now realize that in the video above I
didn’t clearly make the connection as to “Why the future sucks”, so here it is…
Reason #1 Why The Future Sucks
As an example, as I talked about in the video, I didn’t “wait until”
and just did my video without waiting, even if it wasn’t perfect (and lacked clarity).
So here are short clarifications about what I meant: The future sucks because…
If you focus on and rely on the future you will often fall for the
“I will do this when/once…”
Once i feel more confident..
Once I feel X,Y,Z, or circumstances are different.
This is a trap.
Waiting until something is different usually means waiting for something that
will never happen and never getting going. Look, let’s not kid ourselves:
You WILL have some unease and what not when trying and facing new things that
make you feel anxious. There’s no way around that.
If you wait “until…”, you will wait forever. That’s why I’m saying the future sucks.
That is, waiting on some future “when things or I will be this way, then i’ll do it”,
is just a mirage and is a trap you must avoid.
…Or risk wasting years waiting for that time when you’re “ready”, until you
realize you’re no such things as being “ready” (whatever expecations you have of
how you or things need to be before you move forward on something) and you’ll just
have to do it anyway).
Whatever you wanna do, pick the smallest goal and just work on the very
first step toward that small goal, and build on that. There’s just no way around that.
Accept it, work with it.
You don’t have to do much and you can set your own pace, but only by doing
something starting today will you ever get anywhere.
So focusing on the future (with hope) sucks.
Reason #2 Why The Future Sucks
The next way the future sucks, and i’m a victim of this right now (it’s my fault),
is when you focus on the future road ahead, on the fact that you will have to do all
these things, which are hard and/or shitty to do for you in terms of effort and facing your fears,
without much any payoff in return for a good while…
…and focusing on all those things you have to do without any payoff sucks too much
that you don’t move ahead with it at all.
Starting From Scratch… Ouch…
Now this doesn’t apply to every anxiety sufferer but to those who have been sitting
on the sidelines for so long, wasting so much of their lives hiding and avoiding everything,
that they are having to start their life from scratch. Not much going on in their lives, almost
no one around them, not much to look forward to.
And when you start your life from scratch, getting started feels a lot like:
“I have to do and accomplish so many things before…I’m starting to build my life, get a job,
have friends i can look forward to enjoying spending time with after work or on the
And again, in this instance the future sucks, in that focusing on the short to medium
term future, projecting all the time and hard work you will have to put in before you start
enjoying your life with friends etc, can generate enough feeling of discouragement,
depression and what not to keep you from moving forward.
The solution is to focus only on the present and only the next step, but i have to
tell you, as explained in the video, that I struggle quite a bit with this.
It’s one thing to logically tell yourself to simply focus on the now and the next step,
and eventually before you know it a year will have passed by and you’ll be reaping
what you’ve sown a year before… but it’s quite another thing not to feel really discouraged
by this and not really dreading and feeling overwelmed by all the “hard work” without any
rewards you first have to put in…
…especially when you’re at an age where you should’ve done all of this a long time ago.
As in my case at 33.
So if you have any trick, mindset, strategy or what not to deal with this
I and many other people I’m sure, would really like to hear about it.
(I’ve found some strategies I have yet to implement and have some ideas of my own,
but that will be for another time. hint* hint*, the power of momentum is part of it…)
Life is short. Let’s help each other out have the great life we really
want for ourselves!
Until next time,
have a blast!
